About Getaway to Italy

Home / About Getaway to Italy

It all started with a love affair between Ee-Tan and Italy

I first visited Italy in 1991 as a fresh graduate. I was amazed and astonished by the grandeur of the Eternal City, charmed by the canals and gondolas of Venice and swept away by the rolling hills of the beautiful Tuscan country-side. I was also fascinated by the Italians who were passionate and open, albeit sometimes loud and unabashed. Somehow, I felt as if I had Italian blood in me.

I knew I had to return and finally I did two decades later, in fall 2011, after I started learning la bella lingua – the beautiful Italian language. I took the plunge to travel to Italy alone for my first study-travel sojourn, where I enrolled myself in L’università per Stranieri di Perugia (University for Foreigners of Perugia) The month-long course in Perugia did not only increased my l love (and my level) of Italian language but also my love for her. I spent my weekends exploring the hill towns of Umbria, such as Assisi, Gubbio, Orvieto, Spello, and rediscovered the Italy that I’ve missed and grown to love more. I also travelled to other cities and regions for two weeks.

When I came home, I continued to learn the language.  The desire and dream to return grew so strong that subsequently went on four more study-travel sojourns in different parts of Italy in the next eight years. I gained more confidence speaking Italian as I travelled solo to regions and places that I have never been – from remote country sides to the grand mountains and awesome beaches – and absorbed Italy’s rich culture and history, made new friends, savoured sumptuous cuisine and indulged in la dolce vita.

Indeed Italy, the country listed with the most UNESCO Heritage Sites in the world, has so much to offer. I have lived there for close to nine months and had the chances to explore many undiscovered gems, such as the tip of Italy’s heel Leuca of Puglia, the foggy and mysterious Mont Erice in Sciliy and the desserted ancient villages near the vast national park of Abruzzo. They are places still void of tourists, let alone visited by someone from my part of the world.

But no, I am not done with Italy yet. I am revisiting again and at the same time, I have this desire to introduce Italy to travellers who have yet to properly explore it..

Hence, this new venture dedicated solely to travels in Italy. With personal experiences gained over the years, I believe I can help you plan an unforgettable journey to this beautiful country. They don’t call it il bel paese for nothing.

It’s time to getaway to Italy!
